Self-intro to 51–262 and Exercise 1

Hi, my name is Yizhi Zhang. I am a senior majoring in Stats and CS. I am very interested in communication design since it’s a major way nowadays to convey information and idea effectively. This is my first time joining a course in the design department, and I hope I will gain some experience in making some graphic designs in this course.

Effective design: The Japanese keyboard cover for Macbook

The user of this design is people who type Japanese. First, it satisfies the users’ demands perfectly, and at the same time, reduces the difficulty of getting started. This is because every Japanese character is printed on the keyboard. The design increases the amount of information presented on the keyboard without losing its functionality of typing English letters.

Ineffective design:

The order and the pattern is very hard to follow because of the asymmetry. The design is neigher effective nor efficient. The incompactness doesn’t facilitate users finding the floor, but increases the difficulty of usage.
